In a coexistence topology, ODSEE 11g servers coexist with OUD 11g servers with the help of Replication Gateway. Requests to ODSEE 11g servers are replicated to OUD 11g servers, and requests to OUD 11g servers are replicated to ODSEE 11g servers.
This can be the first step to the upgrade path from ODSEE to OUD. Once the coexistence topology is active, you can modify applications that access the original ODSEE 11g deployment so that they access the OUD 11g deployment without disrupting the directory data or other applications. You can test applications against the OUD 11g servers as needed.
A OUD replication server is also required for even the simplest possible Coexistence Topology. The reason is because the OUD 11g replication gateway communicates with OUD 11g replication servers using the replication protocol, and not with OUD 11g directory servers, the replication server is required.
Let me try to show the usecase with the help of pictures. Proxy server is shown in below diagrams but its optional and totally depends on the requirements of an organisation.
a) Prior to deploying the coexistence topology, an organisation has all directory servers run ODSEE 11g.
b) Set up your OUD Servers without specifying any Naming Contexts or Suffix.
c) Bring in your OUD Replication Gateway in between. While the coexistence topology is active, ODSEE 11g and OUD 11g directory servers run together.
d) After you have successfully deployed your coexistence topology, you can upgrade your applications one by one to use OUD 11g directory servers instead of ODSEE 11g directory servers. After all of your applications have been upgraded and can operate with OUD 11g directory servers, you can safely remove the ODSEE 11g directory servers from the coexistence topology. Then you can remove the replication gateway from the topology as well. Removing the ODSEE 11g directory servers and the replication gateway from the coexistence topology converts the coexistence topology to an OUD 11g-only topology.
Important things to note:-
a) If you are running an older version of Sun Directory Server, Enterprise Edition or Sun Java System Directory Server, you must upgrade to at least ODSEE 126.96.36.199.0 prior to deploying a coexistence topology with OUD 188.8.131.52.0.
You can run the following utility to determine which version of directory server software you have:
b) Run the ds2oud utility in diagnostic mode to detect potential issues for a coexistence topology. We will see this in my demo blog how useful this utility is.
c) The ODSEE 11g password policy mode must be DS6 mode. By default ODSEE password policy uses DS5 mode.
